New Photos From Northeastern Minnesota!

I went off the grid for a few days last week (as in largest wilderness area in the lower 48 and no cell phone service) and came back with some new photos from northeastern Minnesota that are now available for viewing and purchase from the online gallery! Didn’t see much wildlife this trip, but I saw some amazingly breathtaking scenery that I’d like to share with you.

Set up camp at Two Island Lake in Superior National Forest about 15 miles inland from Grand Marais, MN just in time to capture the sunset:

Then pulled an all-nighter (so you wouldn’t have to) shooting the Milky Way and watching the Perseid meteors:

Then went scrambling over jagged rocks with my camera gear in the pitch dark along the Lake Superior shorelineย at 4 am (so you wouldn’t have to) to get the sunrise from the east end of Artist Point in Grand Marais:

Then went further up the North Shore to Hollow Rock Bay:

And even further up the Shore to Grand Portage before turning around at the Canadian border, but not before stopping to admire Mt. Josephine:

Went back to Grand Marais to hang out near the shoreline since it was about 20 degrees cooler than the low-90’s temps inland. Had some lunch, played fetch with a local black lab who brought his favorite rock to retrieve out of Lake Superior, and relaxed by the water for a bit:

Then up the Gunflint Trail to several beautiful lakes along the Minnesota / Ontario border. Did I mention it was in the 90’s? Even the loons were hot on Gunflint Lake:

Took a short, steep hike up to Honeymoon Bluff near Flour Lake campground, which overlooks Hungry Jack Lake and Bearskin Lake:

Still made it back to Two Island Lake in time to get the tail end of another sunset:

Before finally crashing after being up for 36 hours straight. It’s a darn shame I was so tired (and had no cell phone service being off the grid), so I didn’t know the Northern Lights were putting on a brief show later that night.

Next day I broke camp and headed down to Cascade Beach on Lake Superior for some seascapes:

And long exposure photography along the shoreline:

Before heading back inland up the Sawbill Trail near Tofte to one of my favorite spots that I hadn’t been to in about 25 years – Crescent Lake:

Stopped by Temperance River State Park along the lake shore on the way back towards the Twin Cities, but there were waaaay too many tourists and the rivers were all running a little low, so I headed home. I hope you enjoyed reading and looking – hopefully it made you want to be there yourself!

For such a short trip and getting skunked on wildlife sightings, I still managed to get plenty of nice new photos from northeastern Minnesota this trip! Most are already up in the gallery and I have several panoramas that I’ll save for special purchases. Still processing more photos, too! I’m at my 100 image limit in the gallery, so I’ll be removing some older stuff to put new photos up. In other words – it there’s something you like, buy it now while you can ๐Ÿ™‚

Afton Trail Races

Afton State Park

Instead of running the Afton Trail Races for the first time in many years, this year I was one of the race photographers.

The Afton Trail Runs 25K & 50K are hosted at Afton State Park annually on the first weekend in July. It’s notoriously hot and humid (this year was relatively cool with highs in the mid-80’s), with nearly 5000 feet in total elevation gain & loss on the 25K loop. A potential additional challenge this year was the air quality, since we’ve had hazy skies caused by wildfires in Canada for the last few days. Anyhoo, back to the photography…

I will be posting race images first on my North Woods Photos Facebook page, so if you want to see them as soon as possible, like my page ๐Ÿ˜‰ At some point, they will probably be linked up to the race site. I’ve got almost 2000 images to process, edit, and upload, so hang tight ๐Ÿ˜‰

I shot a short video of the 50K start before moving to the down slope of the Northern Hill, then up to the Campground, and finally for a short bit near the home stretch towards the finish. I was hoping to capture some of the scenery of the St. Croix River Valley in addition to the runners, but the increasing haze throughout the day may have scrambled my plans a bit. I tried to get photos of as many runners as I could, but I’m sure I missed some folks. I know that I missed some of the 25K runners while I was changing cards in one of my cameras – sorry about that. I’m not sure where Kevin or Todd shot, so hopefully they caught anyone I may have missed.

Here is the video of the 50K start:

Congrats to everyone who toed the line at this year’s Afton Trail Races 25K or 50K! It was a blast seeing you out having fun in the sun on the trail ๐Ÿ™‚

I added a few new goodies to the gallery just in time for Father’s Day!

Walleye

Walleye – before you catch ’em!

Ideally, you’ll be able to take your Dad to the North Woods and experience it first hand for yourselves: tromping through hard woods or tall pine forests, fishing or boating one (or more) of the thousands of pristine lakes, relaxing next to a spectacular waterfall, camping under the Northern Lights…. you get the idea.

Willow River Falls

Willow River

But if you can’t, the next best thing would be to give a gift that makes him feel like he went! Choose between photo prints that you can frame yourself, or canvas or metal prints that come ready to hang. Your order can be drop shipped anywhere in the US, so all you have to do is select the image you’d like to send to Dad and we’ll take care of the rest!

Great Horned Owls Still Nesting

This past week, I’ve had a chance to meet a couple of new neighbors! I discovered a Great Horned Owl nest in one of my favorite local parks less than a mile from my home. What’s particularly unusual about this nest isn’t that it’s in this park, or that Great Horned Owls have occupied it, but that one of the two owlets is still in the nest on May 1! The other nest I’ve been following this year was evacuated in late March.

Great Horned Owl Mom and Owlet in Nest

Great Horned Owl Mom with Owlet still in the nest

This nest has gotten some outside attention. Someone claiming to be from National Geographic was supposedly filming some video a few days ago according to a fellow park user. And I was contacted by the Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota who apparently have an orphan that they are hoping to find a foster family for, but the owlets need to be the same age for that to work. I’ve forwarded a few high res pics to them and also provided some info about the sibling that has already branched to see if this family would be a good fit. Haven’t heard a definitive answer yet. Keep your fingers crossed that the orphan finds an owl family!

Great Horned Owlet BranchingGreat Horned Owlet branching – still can’t fly or hunt yet.

Owls typically don’t build their own nests, but prefer to commandeer someone else’s or find tree cavities to nest in. Once the young birds leave the nest, they will stay with their parents over the summer while they learn to fly and hunt on their own. The Raptor Center has some general Great Horned Owl info about these beautiful birds. I’m looking forward to spending more time with my new neighbors this spring and summer ๐Ÿ™‚

Art Showing at Dow Art Gallery

It’s been a very busy couple of months! Not only getting the biz set up, but I’ve been accepted into not one, but two different galleries this month! I have a single piece in a shared gallery at West Photo – no word on when the opening will be for that one – it seems to keep changing. But there is an art showing at the Dow Art Gallery in St. Paul for sure this Thursday!

Soaring Eagle Watercolor

See this on gallery wrapped canvas in person at the Dow Art Gallery!

At the Dow, I currently have eight different photographs on display in a 4000 square foot gallery that also hosts approximately 45 other artists of all types: painters, sculptors, photographers, etc. The art showing is open to the public and will be held Thursday, March 26 from 5:30 – 8ish pm. Location: Dow Art Gallery & Picture Framing, 2242 University Ave W, St Paul, MN 55114.

If you come, you’ll have a chance to buy raffle tickets and win up to $1000 in art from the gallery! Munchies and music will also be happening and it’s FREE to get in the door! How cool is that? If you stop by my exhibit, you’ll get a coupon code for 20% off any gallery wrapped canvas that you order online (that means any photo in any of my galleries). Coupon expires at the end of April.

Hope to see you there!

Thank you for stopping by the brand spankin’ new North Woods Photos site! The purpose of this site will be to show you my stompin’ grounds in and around Minnesota and nearby areas of the Upper Midwest through my outdoor photography.ย  You’ll learn about local hot spots for viewing wildlife, see amazing landscapes, and see how I tweak some images to get more abstract or painterly results.ย  I also occasionally serve as a photographer for local trail races (I am a trail runner myself).

If you see something you like, you’ll have the option to purchase images as prints, canvases, or metalsย  from a professional labย  if desired!

Before any of that can happen, I’ve got to get the website up and running and take care of setting up the business ๐Ÿ™‚

Anticipated Grand Opening date is currently April 2015. I hope you are as excited as I am!
