As always, all of my products are professionally printed using conservation grade archival inks and materials and will last longer than you with proper care. Come on down to the Dow Art Gallery during St. Paul Art Crawl to check it out, score some deals, and support a local artist!

Nature Photography Day is June 15, 2017! So, what the heck is Nature Photography Day?
Nature Photography Day
“In 2006, NANPA (North American Nature Photography Association) celebrated the first Nature Photography Day and placed it in McGraw-Hill’s reference work, Chases’s Calendar of Events. Many media and websites took notice. Since then, people throughout the North American continent as well as overseas have discovered numerous ways to observe and enjoy the day.” – NANPA
Thursday, June 15 2017 marks 12 years of Nature Photography Day! Not only is this a day for photographers to capture the beauty of our natural world, it’s a day to promote the enjoyment of nature photography and celebrate how images have helped advance conservation efforts to preserve landscapes, plants and animal species around the world.
“Consider that the pursuit of nature photography has helped to save species of animals and plants, plus their habitat. Preservation is a legacy. In fact, the world’s first-ever national park—Yellowstone, in 1872—came about thanks to the images of William Henry Jackson.” – NANPA
The North American Nature Photography Association encourages people everywhere to enjoy the day by using a camera to explore the natural world. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy – your smartphone camera will be just fine. A backyard, park, or local lake close by can work. Walking, hiking, or riding a bike to take photos are activities that don’t lead to a carbon footprint and it’s appropriate for all ages and abilities. There are LOTS of parks and trails right in the Twin Cities where you can unplug, even if it’s just for 30 minutes. And just being out in nature can ease stress and improve mood!
How and where will you celebrate Nature Photography Day?
Where: Dow Art Gallery, 2242 University Avenue West, St. Paul, MN 55114

The Spring version of the St. Paul Art Crawl 2016 takes place at several different artist studios and galleries throughout the city, with several locations close together in Lowertown, Downtown and Midtown. I hope you’ll hop on the Green Line for a free ride to the Dow Building at Raymond Station and stop by to say “Hello” some time during the event!
Dow Art Gallery
North Woods Photos will once again be showing at Dow Art Gallery along with 35-40 other artists, which is located on the first floor of the Dow Building at 2242 University Ave W, St Paul, MN 55114. Get Your Discount
The discount is only available to current members of Upper Midwest Trail Runners, so be sure to sign up! Simply shoot an email to info thingy umtr dot net to get your coupon code, then go to the galleries and fill up your shopping cart (and I mean fill ‘er up)!
Use the coupon code at checkout to get 20% off your order – which can include my regular art in addition to any race photos. Makes a great gift for yourself, friends, or family!
Note: The proofing site only allows you to order from one gallery at a time, so if you DO decide to order prints from the North Woods gallery in addition to Trail Race prints – please let me know before you order so I can move your race photos into the Trail Running folder of the North Woods gallery. Otherwise, you’d have to place two separate orders and pay for shipping on each. If you only want a digital file for your race and prints of my other art, you’ll need to order separately since digital files are not available for non-race images. If you only want race photos, you can do it all in one order even if you have both prints and digitals.
Get Your Stuff
Prints and products are delivered directly from my professional lab to you. Once you complete your order, it comes to me for approval and the order is sent to the lab. Please be aware that I’ve given you the power to crop photos as you see fit – and not all photos are going to work well with some sizes. When placing items in the shopping cart, you may see some red areas on the image depending on the size you choose. The red areas are the parts that will be cut off that image during printing to make it your chosen size. You can drag the image to change the crop. There are no refunds once the order has been sent since they begin the printing process right away. Turn around time depends on what products you order, but prints usually arrive at your doorstep within a week.
For digital downloads, you’ll get an email with a download link shortly after completing your purchase. Since these are high resolution files, download time will depend on your internet connection and service provider. Currently, there is no MN sales tax on digital photos.
As always, low resolution digital files will be posted on the North Woods Photos FaceBook page (so please “like” it) and will be FREE 🙂
Which Races For 2016?
I don’t know yet – it depends on lots of factors (both personal and professional), but I’ll try to let you know as soon as I do! I tend to favor ultras 🙂
Do not hesitate to contact me at any time if you have questions or concerns.
Happy Trails – and try to bust out of that walk when you see the camera 😉
Just a quick “heads up” that the annual Do the Dow will be happening next weekend!
Do the Dow
What is Do the Dow?
Do the Dow is an annual event held every November where all of the artists in the Dow Arts Building in St. Paul open their studio doors to the general public. You get a chance to see the artists in their workshops, see the art they produce, have an opportunity to ask questions about how they make their art, and more! Many will offer special sales – just in time to kick off your holiday shopping 🙂
I myself will be there where I have several pieces on display in the Dow Art Gallery on the first floor. I will also be bringing lots of matted & mounted prints and possibly some additional gallery wrapped canvases – some of which are not available for purchase online. There are more than 40 artists just in the first floor gallery alone! Photography, textiles, sculptures, paintings, metals, etc.
It’s a free event and fun for all ages – so bring all generations of your friends and family! There will also be live music and free food & beverages available.
When is Do the Dow?
Friday November 13 from 6 pm – 10 pm. I will probably only be there ’til 9 pm.
Saturday November 14 from noon – 6 pm.
Where is Do the Dow?
My art (and I) will be in the Dow Art Gallery on the first floor of the Dow Arts Building, located at:
It’s right on the green line just a block away from the Raymond Ave. station, or there is some free parking nearby (which fills quickly for this event).
Do the Dow Special Offer
For the Do the Dow event I will be offering a special sale during the event hours. When you purchase any four of my items, you get a fifth item of equal or lesser value FREE! This only applies to the stock I’ll have on hand at the gallery and does not include orders from the online galleries. I’ll have plenty of matted & mounted 5 x 7 and 8 x 10 prints, a few unmounted 11 x 14 prints, and several gallery wrapped canvases of varying sizes ready to hang. I will also have one wood print on maple that is ready to hang and a few framed 8 x 10 and 11 x 14 prints that are ready to hang. Most people prefer to purchase the matted & mounted prints and get their own frames. Custom framing is available right there since the gallery is housed right in Dow Art Gallery and Picture Framing, owned by Khanh Tran. Professional art framed by a professional framer makes for an exceptional gift to yourself or your loved ones!
To see or purchase my work in person, stop by the Dow building and enter through the main entrance on the front of the building, located at 2242 University Ave W in St. Paul. Very close to I-94 and Hwy 280, with free street parking. You can also get free transportation on the green line (get a free ticket at our gallery) or metro transit right to the front door!
I’ll have LOTS of matted and mounted prints with all conservation grade archival papers, inks, and materials on hand – 5×7 prints that fit in an 8×10 frame and 8×10 prints that fit in an 11×14 frame. Many are not available for purchase online and I’ve only printed one copy of most of the photos, so stop by early for the best selection! If you buy 4 prints, you get another print of equal or lesser value FREE! I also have some gallery wrapped canvases and a wood print available for purchase so you can get your holiday shopping done early this year 🙂
Just at Dow Art Gallery and Picture Framing alone, you’ll get to see art by more than 40 artists (photography, paintings, fiber art, sculptures, pottery, and more). There will also be:
Make and Take Away Art for Children of all ages,
MN Urban Art Contest – vote for your favorite art piece and have a chance to win a $100 Framing Gift Certificate,
Featuring Live Music by “The Wall Street Orchestra” performing 7pm to 10pm Friday, 5pm to 8pm Saturday, and 12pm to 3pm Sunday
Beer Tasting by Tin Whiskers on Saturday 3pm to 8pm
I was one of the race photographers for the Superior Fall Trail Races again this year. With distances of marathon, 50 miles and 100 miles – all on the rugged Superior Hiking Trail in northeastern Minnesota – it means I’m usually pulling an all-nighter to shoot the races. This year, we were blessed with perfect weather, clear skies, and an appearance by the Aurora Borealis dancing over the 100 mile runner’s heads.
Running under the Northern Lights
I managed to sneak away from the race for a bit and caught the Big Dipper reflecting in a perfectly calm lake – even caught a shooting star going right through the Big Dipper!
Aurora Borealis with Shooting Star thru Big Dipper
After the 50 mile race started the next morning in pre-dawn dark, I snuck away to Tettegouche State Park to watch the sunrise over Lake Superior while I had breakfast on the beach.
Then it was back to the races again for the rest of the day! Lugged two cameras, a tripod and a backpack up the Caribou River gorge to get the 50 mile runners as they passed right next to a small waterfall. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring the flash for the camera and the light was tricky, so I apologize for the quality of that set of photos 🙁
50 Milers running alongside the Caribou River
After Caribou, I hiked from the Sawbill aid station in to the bottom of the very steep and rocky Carlton Peak, where the marathoners had already gone through but the 50 and 100 milers were still navigating their way to the finish less than 20 miles away. All of my race photos have been posted on the North Woods Photos Facebook page if you’re interested in looking at them. There are a few bonus photos for my Facebook fans as well 😉
I’ve had a couple of inquiries from runners of both this race and the Afton Trail Races if they could purchase copies of photos I took of them running, or the Milky Way photo from last year as well as the Aurora shot from this year. The answer is Yes! Just let me know which ones so I can upload them to the online gallery. I won’t be keeping the individual runner photos for more than a few months after the event, so get them NOW if you want them! I just don’t have the space on my hard drive to keep photos that most people aren’t interested in purchasing after the race has come and gone. You are welcome to download and use the low resolution photos that have been uploaded to Facebook for your personal use for free – just be sure to give me photo credit (a link to this website would be greatly appreciated, too). 🙂
In addition, I’m offering 20% off anything you buy until October 31, 2015 with promo code SUPERIOR2015, so this would be a great time to treat yourself to a photo of your race, or even do a little holiday gift shopping and check out all of the other galleries 😉
